LACMA

In the region of Miracle Mile in Los Angeles, on Wilshire Boulevard, is the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. LACMA is close to the La Brea Tar Pits on Museum Row (George C. Page Museum).

In 1961, LACMA was established after the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science, and Art split up. Four years later, it relocated to the William Pereira-designed facility on Wilshire Boulevard. The museum added many buildings starting in the 1980s and continued in succeeding decades as its wealth and collection expanded. Four campus buildings were removed in 2020 to make room for a new structure created by Peter Zumthor. Strong community opposition to his design resulted, and architectural critics slammed it.
